Why he might be annoying:

He described himself as 'a loudmouthed Irish priest.'
He called American bishops 'mitered pinheads.'
Many critics felt his novels sold mainly because of the novelty of a priest writing steamy potboilers.
The sex scenes in his novels prompted the National Catholic Register to say that he had 'the dirtiest mind ever ordained.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He said his novels were 'less erotic than the Song of Songs in the Scriptures.'
He gave generously to charities, especially for education in inner-city Chicago schools.
He was an early and outspoken critic of the Roman Catholic Church's mishandling of pedophile priests.
He suffered a skull fracture when his clothing caught on the door of a taxi and he was thrown to the pavement (2008).
