During World War II, he joined the Civilian Air Patrol and became the shortest licensed pilot in the nation.
He was married to his wife, Margaret Marie, for 50 years until her death in a car accident.
He continued appearing at Wizard of Oz conventions and events into his 90s, including the unveiling of a star for the Munchkins on the Hollywood Walk of Fame (2007).
