Charged with inciting riot and conspiracy at the Democratic National Convention (August 26–29, 1968)
    Indicted on March 20, 1969; arraigned April 9, 1969
Presided over by Judge Julius Hoffman
They were accused of spearheading one of the most vicious riots in the history of Chicago - all while protesting the Vietnam War.
In reference to their alleged manners, one juror asked, ‘Would you like your children to grow up like them?’
The judge overseeing the trial had a history of racist attitudes on the job.
Bobby Seale was the eighth defendant in the case, hence the original Chicago Eight nickname.
    A. Hoffman and Rubin appeared in judicial robes for one court date.
The National Guard had to be called in (October 9) as demonstrations intensified outside the courtroom.
Rubin wanted to nominate a pig (not a police officer, but a bona fide genus Suidae named Pigasus the Immortal) for the Presidency.
Figures from the counterculture and left wing were summoned to testify at the trial.
Eight police officers were also charged in the mess.
The original charges were dismissed by an appeals court on February 18, 1970, with Froines and Weiner being fully exonerated right away.
The other five were cleared on November 21, 1972, after a five-year sentence was overturned. None of them served any time.
Rubin was pleased that they ‘gave the court system a heart attack.’
Although the trial was considered a 'monumental non-event,' it had come to symbolize the changing lay of the land in the United States and the world at large.
