Why he might be annoying
He married three times, divorcing twice.
He moved to Hollywood after his editor boss denied his request to pen a film criticism column.
He liked to make cynical observations about Hollywood like 'movie actors wear dark glasses to funerals to conceal the fact that their eyes are not red from weeping.'
His opinion of Marilyn Monroe? 'An arrogant little tail-twitcher who learned to throw sex in your face' (yikes!)
Why he might not be annoying
He began his career as a newspaper journalist.
He was good friends with Groucho Marx.
He is a rarity in that he was a screenwriter who successfully transitioned to directorial efforts.
He was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay for 'The Grapes of Wrath' (1940).
He directed Joanne Woodward in 'The Three Faces of Eve' for which she received the Academy Award (1957).
He said: 'I think John Ford almost dies because he can't write. It just runs him nuts, that he has thoughts and ideas and has never trained himself to put them down on paper. And I've found that true of so many directors. They're just so thwarted.'
