U.S. Senator

The Resume

    (April 20, 1936- )
    Born in Topeka, Kansas
    Charles Patrick Roberts
    Republican
Senior ranking United States Senator from Kansas
Former Member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Kansas' 1st District (1981-1997)
Earned a B.A. in Journalism from Kansas State University in 1958
Joined the staff of Republican Kansas Senator Frank Carlson, in 1967
Became administrative assistant to Kansas's 1st District Congressman Keith Sebelius, in 1969
Served eight terms in the House, including one as chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, before getting elected to the US Senate in 1996
Served variously as the Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee (1995 - 1997), Chairman of the Senate Ethics Committee (2001), Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee (2003 - 2007), and Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee (2015- )

Why he might be annoying:

    He supported the Patriot Act.
He predicated the Pat Roberts Intelligence Scholars Program on the passage of the 2004 Intelligence Authorization Act.
Google searches for his name inevitably turn up items related to another carbon dated reactionary fossil prone to making charged comments (only this one hosts the 700 Club).
As of 2016, He is the longest-serving member of the Kansas delegation, but spent the first 14 years of his Senate career as Kansas' junior senator (Sam Brownback inherited Bob Dole's Senate seat that same election cycle).
He faced an uphill reelection battle in 2014, flanked by not only a Democrat challenger, but an Independent candidate as well.
Controversy erupted when it was revealed that the Kansas Secretary of State, Kris Kobach, charged with districting and elections deadlines, and who had made several calls favoring Roberts' campaign, was also a member of his honorary committee member of said campaign.
An NYT expose reported that the house he claimed as his Dodge City residence was actually both owned and occupied by campaign contributors (2014).
He made plainly tepid attempts to push back against the story, only half-jokingly commenting: 'Every time I get an opponent - uh - I mean every time I get a chance to - I'm home.'
His then-flailing campaign received diverse support from the likes of Former Sen. Bob Dole and Sarah Palin. When questioned as to whose side he was on in the 2013 government shutdown, which Dole had condemned but Palin supported, he replied: 'Both. How 'bout that?'
He tweeted a video of himself trashing President Obama's proposal to close down the Guantanamo Bay prison, literally throwing it in the garbage (Feb. 23, 2016).

Why he might not be annoying:

He served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He worked as a newspaper reporter, in the late '60s, for several Arizona-based publications.
His father was a Chairman of the Republican National Committee under President Eisenhower.
His great-grandfather, J.W. Roberts, was the founder of the Oskaloosa Independent, the second-oldest Kansas-based newspaper.
He headed investigations of the intelligence failures which led to the Iraq Invasion, having served as chairman of the Committee on Intelligence at the time.
He soundly transcended the efforts by Liberal advocacy groups affiliated with Harry Reid and George Soros to push him out of office in 2014.
There was brief chatter on Capitol Hill about Kathleen Sebelius possibly running for his Senate seat (her father-in-law occupied the seat before he did).
The DNC clearly saw the embattled Senator's close race as a bellwether for the rest of the country in their initiative to make gains in the Midterm elections, subsequently showering 'Independent' candidate Greg Orman with donations (it worked only briefly, ultimately failing).
Joe Biden, during his swearing in of the 114th Congress, told Roberts' granddaughter 'thank God you look like your mother' (during the same swearing-in where he came off as a dirty old man breathing in the ear of Sen. Chris Coons' daughter).
Footage of a Senate Agricultural Committee hearing on trade went viral when his cell phone went off interrupting the proceedings as he was speaking, revealing his ring-tone to be Elsa from Disney's 'Frozen' singing 'Let it Go' (Apr. 16, 2015).
