Why he might be annoying:

He was a lonely and melancholy man.
He had a strong attachment to his mother, and could not find a woman he thought lived up to her standards.
Because his wife ran off with a mathematician, he rused to offer a prize for mathematics.

Why he might not be annoying:

After his brother was killed in the family factory, while handling nitroglycerin (1864), he worked on a safe way of handling the chemical.
He invented an organic packing material containing the nitroglycerin and named it 'dynamite' (1867).
He invented ballistite, a smokeless powder.
In his will of $9,000,000, he provided a bulk of it for the Nobel Prizes.
One might see it as hypocrisy that a person who spent their life developing weapons would give prizes for peace.
However, it was just his seeing the danger and potential of these weapons that made Nobel a man of peace.
