    (December 3, 1368-October 21, 1422)
    King of France (1380-1422)
Nicknamed ‘Charles the Well-Beloved' and ‘Charles the Mad'
He suffered from insanity during his mid-twenties onward.
At one point, he thought he was made of glass.
His queen, Isabeau of Bavaria, was shrewdly nicknamed the ‘She-Wolf of France.'
He let his children grow up in squalor.
His reign was a complete disaster.
He ruled France during the Hundred Years' War.
He almost burned to death in a freak fire at a party thrown by his wife.
He signed the Treaty of Troyes, which turned France over to England's control.
He declared his son, the future Charles VII, to be a bastard.
He became king at the age of eleven.
His mental illness may have been caused by porphyria, a hereditary blood disorder.
Before he went mad, he was a kindly, good-natured king.
His son Charles eventually regained the crown with the help of Joan of Arc.
His daughter, Katherine of Valois, married Owen Tudor and started England's Tudor dynasty.
