    (June 7, 1936-March 25, 2012)
Born in Washington, District of Columbia
Sports writer/author/radio and TV commentator/raconteur/bon vivant
Owner/editor of 'Boxing Illustrated' (1969-73) and 'The Ring' (1979-83)
Wrote over 80 books, mostly about boxing history
Appeared as himself in 'Night and the City' (1992), 'The Great White Hype' (1996) and 'Rocky Balboa' (2006)
Inducted as an observer into the International Boxing Hall of Fame (2005)
In running magazines, he was described as a good editor but a lousy businessman.
He greeted fellow sportswriter Dick Young at the door of his hotel room dripping wet from a shower, buck naked escept for a fedora on his head and stogie in his mouth.
He laughed at his own jokes, which were usually ancient and not terribly funny.
After being asked to predict the results of a fight, he would inevitably add, 'But then again, I picked the Japs to win the big one.'
Sports Illustrated wrote that he 'became a personality for hire in his later years, showing up at the big fights on HBO's dime.'
He was married to Suzanne Davis for 51 years until his death.
During his first career in the advertising business, he created the 'N-E-S-T-L-E-S, Nestles makes the very best' jingle.
He restored 'The Ring' to respectability in the wake of a pay for rankings scandal.
His writing was described as having 'swagger and panache.'
Sports Illustrated wrote that his public persona 'may have been a caricature... but it was one of his own happy invention.'
