The Des Moines Register commented, 'King has been an embarrassment to Iowa,' adding, 'This space won't allow listing all his outrageous remarks and positions.'
He said prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib 'amounts to hazing.'
After the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi he joked, 'There are probably not 72 virgins in the hell he's at, and if there are they probably all look like Helen Thomas.'
He claimed without evidence that illegal immigrants sexually assault 'eight little girls' every day as part of a 'slow motion terrorist attack.'
He said if Barack Obama is elected president, 'Then the radical Islamists, the al-Qaeda, the radical Islamists and their supporters will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 because they will declare victory in this war on terror.' (March 7, 2008)
He was stripped of his committee assignments by the Republican Party after comments questioning why 'white nationalist' and 'white supremacist' were offensive (January 14, 2019).

His spokesperson apologized to Helen Thomas.
A campaign spokesperson said, 'John McCain rejects the type of politics that degrades our civics... and obviously that extends to Congressman King's statement.'
Obama said, 'Mr. King and individuals like him thrive on offensive or controversial statements as a way to get into the papers, so I don't take it too seriously.'
