The Resume

    (September 20, 1899-October 18, 1973)
Emigrated to the United States (1937)
Wrote 'On Tyranny,' 'Natural Right and History,' 'Persecution and the Art of Writing' and 'What is Political Philosophy?'
Known as the Patron Saint of Neo-conservatism

Why he might be annoying:

    He smoked.
He served in the German Army during World War I.
His views are contrary to many principles of Democracy and individual liberties.
He believed that the general public was too ignorant and unenlightened to handle political and philosophical truths and that the government needed to tell them what was good for them.
He said: 'those who are fit to rule are those who realize there is no morality and that there is only one natural right, the right of the superior to rule over the inferior.'
He believed that the public must be preoccupied with diversions like religion so the 'enlightened few' could run the government without interruption.
In his view, it was acceptable for the government to deceive and manipulate the public in order to maintain order and morality.
It is believed that members of the Bush Administration, most notably Paul Wolfowitz, used his ideas to help make a case for the War in Iraq.

He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg.
He taught at Cambridge University and at several American universities.
He wrote many critiques on ancient and modern philosophers.
His writings are influential on political science and political theory.
His books have been described as lucid, insightful, and challenging.
He has influenced a number of leading conservatives, including Wolfowitz, John Podhoretz, Bill Kristol, Clarence Thomas, William Bennett, Alan Keyes and Allan Bloom.
