Why he might be annoying:

    He was typecast as the edgy tough guy or a shady character.
    He was a juvenile delinquent and gang member as a youth.
    He got sent to a reformatory for his trouble.
    He played Bogart-type roles but never achieved Bogey's acclaim.
    In an obscure homage to Garfield's character Sgt. Joe Winocki in the movie 'Air Force,' Christopher Walken's character in Pulp Fiction mentions a 'gunner on a transport named Winocki' who safeguarded a man's watch during the Vietnam War.
    Contrary to his macho image, his nickname was 'Julie.'
    He testified under oath in front of a congressial committee that he did not know any Communists, despite his close friends and wife were Communists.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He turned himself around as a youth, channeling his energy into boxing and acting.
    He won a debate contest, earning him a scholarship which he used to study acting.
    He was a victim of the Communist blacklist of the 1950s.
    His daughter Katharine died of an allergic reaction in 1945.
    He married Roberta Seidman, his childhood sweetheart.
    His movie 'A Gentleman's Agreement' shed light on the controversial subject of anti-Semitism (1947). Being Jewish himself, the movie was a personal cause for him.
    He paved the way for the Hollywood 'rebel,' being a forerunner to James Dean, Montgomery Clift and the brooding 70s heroes played by Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro.
    He died too young, at 39, from a weak heart.
    He died having sex at his girlfriend's apartment.
