Winner of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine (with Jack Szostak and Elizabeth Blackburn) for her discovery of telomerase
Telomerase is an enzyme that maintains stability in chromosomes
The discovery has great implications for disease research especially cancer research
Education: BA in biology from University of California Santa Barbara and PhD in Molecular Biology from Berkeley
Over sixty articles and over thirty book reviews published
Has also won the Wiley Prize and the Lasker and Richard Lounsbery Awards

Why she might be annoying:

She has a PhD and has won the Nobel Prize, and still kicks about sexism and the 'old boys network' holding her back.
She made her kids pose with her when she held her news conference announcing her Nobel win.
Her middle name is Widney.

Why she might not be annoying:

She made her discovery when she was only 24 years old and had not even received her PhD.
It was 25 years before her work was recognized by the Nobel committee.
She made her discovery on Christmas Day 1984 and went home and put on Bruce Springsteen's 'Born in the USA' and danced to it.
She was doing laundry and getting ready for her spinning class when she heard of her award.
She has dyslexia and had to take remedial classes growing up.
