    It gets only six hours of daylight during winter, with frequently cloudy weather accentuating the darkness.
    It did not become a major city until Russia defeated Sweden, annexed Finland, and moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki to reduced Swedish influence on the country (1809).
    It was originally scheduled to host the 1940 Olympics which were cancelled when World War II broke out.
