The Resume

    (January 16, 1969- )
    Born in Miami, Florida
Birth name was Rene Alexander Acosta
US Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division (2003-05)
US Attorney for the Southern District of Florida (2005-09)
Nominated for Secretary of Labor by Donald Trump
Confirmed by the Senate, 60-38 (April 27, 2017)
Announced his resignation (July 12, 2019)

Why he might be annoying:

As Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, he cut a controversial deal with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, agreeing not to file federal charges if Epstein pleaded guilty to two state charges of soliciting prostitutes (2008), for which he served 13 months in jail.
An investigation by the Miami Herald concluded that he repeatedly 'acquiesced to Epstein’s legal team’s demands, which often focused on ways to limit the scandal by shutting out his victims and the media.'
A federal court ruled that he had violated the Crime Victims' Rights Act of 2004 by failing to keep Epstein's victims informed while the deal was being negotiated (2019).
He proposed cutting by two thirds the budget of the Labor Department agency that combats human trafficking (including sex trafficking) and forced labor (from $68 million in 2018 to less than $20 million in 2020).

Why he might not be annoying:

    His parents are Cuban refugees.
He was the first member of his family to go to college.
He was twice named one of the nation's 50 most influential Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine.
As Attorney for the South District of Florida, his office successfully prosecuted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, Cali Cartel founders Miguel and Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela, and the Swiss bank UBS.
He and his supporters argued that a conviction against Epstein in federal court was unlikely and the state of Florida was unwilling to bring charges, making the plea deal -- which required Epstein to register as a sex offender -- the best way to end Epstein's sexual exploitation of minors.
He criticized the state's lenient treatment of Epstein (which included housing him in a private wing of the Palm Beach County Jail and allowing 'work release' to his office for up to 12 hours a day, six days a week).
