Why he might be annoying
He was a founding member and first secretary general of the Communist Party of Burma (1939).
He collaborated with the Japanese occupation government during WWII, serving as Minister of War.
Winston Churchill called him 'a traitor rebel leader.'
He persecuted members of the Karen ethnic group for their loyalty to Britain.
British colonial governor Reginal Dorman-Smith attempted to put him on trial for his role in the murder of a Karen village headman.
Why he might not be annoying
As editor of a student magazine at the University of Rangoon, he was expelled from school for refusing to identify the author of an article criticizing a university official.
He became skeptical of Japanese promises of Burmese independence and led the Burma National Army in a revolt against the Japanese occupiers (March 27, 1945).
During the pro-democracy 8-8-88 Uprising, his portrait was carried by demonstrators and used as a rallying point.
Following the uprising, Myanmar's military junta redesigned the nation's currency, the kyat, removing his portrait.
