    Born in Olympus, Tennessee
    US Representative from Tennessee's 4th Disctrict (1907-21,1923-31)
    US Senator from Tennessee (1931-33)
    US Secretary of State (1933-44)
    Won the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in establishing the United Nations (1945)

Why he might be annoying:

    He was the main author of the first federal income tax law (1913).
    He was an unsuccessful candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination (1928).
    He advised FDR to send the SS St. Louis, carrying 936 Jews fleeing the Nazis, back to Europe (1939), where many of the refugees ended up victims of the Holocaust.
    When the Free French liberated St. Pierre and Miquelon (December, 1941), he tried to have the Vichy governor reinstated.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He was born in a log cabin.
    He served in the Tennessee Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War (1898).
    He was principal architect of the 'Good Neighbor Policy' that improved relations with Latin America.
    British diplomat Lord Halifax called him 'a great example to statesmen of any country...universally respected, known, and trusted.'
