    Defense end for the Dallas Texans (1952) and Baltimore Colts (1953-64,1966)
    Eleven-time Pro Bowler (1954-64)
    #89 retired by the Colts
    Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame (1972)
    Co-founder/co-owner of the Gino’s Hamburgers fast-food chain
    He was initially rejected for his high school football team.
    He would nervously pace the dressing room during the hours before kickoff. (‘I probably walked thirty miles before games.’)
    When he and fellow Colt Art Donovan were both injured and shared a hospital room, nurses found them mixing a pitcher of highballs, using a thermometer for a stirrer.
    He retired and came back to the Colts twice before leaving the game for good.
    After Gino’s was sold to Marriott International (1982), his name was taken off the restaurants and they were converted to Roy Rogers.
    He was a machine gunner in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.
    As team captain for the University of San Francisco, he declined an invitation to the Orange Bowl when Bowl officials ‘suggested’ the team leave its two black players at home (1951).
    Quarterback Bobby Layne said being hit by him was like ‘running into a tree trunk in the dark.’
    He had a reputation as a clean player: ‘I never got hit with a 15-yard penalty. No late hits. No clipping. No hitting out of bounds.’
    He was named best defensive end of the NFL’s first half-century (1969).
