U.S. Governor

The Resume

    (July 31, 1956- )
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights (1994-97)
    Governor of Massachusetts (2007- )
Second African-American elected governor in the United States

Why he might be annoying:

As assistant attorney general, he defended a New Jersey school board's decision to fire a white teacher instead of a black teacher in order to promote diversity.
The Washington Times called him 'the grand autocrat of affirmative action.'
After taking office as governor, he spent $11,000 on drapes and changed his government-provided car from a Crown Victoria to a Cadillac.
He called former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin on behalf of Ameriquest, a mortgage company of which he was a former board member.
He favored providing state services to illegal immigrants, including public housing, drivers' licenses and in-state tuition for colleges.
He was involved in a 2008 presidential campaign controversy when the Hillary Clinton campaign accused Barack Obama of plagiarizing a Patrick speech.

Why he might not be annoying:

When he was three, his father abandoned the family to become a jazz musician.
He helped draft civil rights laws for post-apartheid South Africa.
While serving on the board of United Airlines, he encouraged the company to become the first airline to offer domestic partner benefits to all employees.
After submitting a budget calling for cuts in services, he said, 'I cannot in good conscience ask the agencies to make those choices without being willing to make them myself,' and reimbursed the state for the drapes and the monthly difference in his car allowance.
He dismissed the plagiarism claims, adding, 'I think it's a sad comment on the state of this race and the state of our politics that the Clinton campaign is taking this particular tack.'
