He was effeminate.
He was skeletally thin.
He had a wormy, corpse-like manner.
A critic of the time called his art 'diseased, weird, macabre, and sinister.'
Although heterosexual, he was associated with the gay Victorian subculture.
He was fired from a job because he had illustrated one of Oscar Wilde's plays.
He was a musical prodigy as a child.

Why he might not be annoying:

He was diagnosed with tuberculosis at seven.
He died of it at age 25.
He grew up poor.
He became a huge success by his early twenties.
His illustrations are eerie, beautiful, and sometimes sexually explicit.
His artistic style has influenced many others.
