    He often butted heads with the heads of the Union Cycliste Internationale as a result of his bike 'Old Faithful' failing to comply with the federation's rules.
    He dropped out of college and defaulted on his fees.
    He kept his homosexuality in the closet for many years.
    He created his bicycle, 'Old Faithful' out of scrap metal and washer machine parts.
    He is considered a pioneer in the cycling world.
    He successfully beat the Velodrome record for the fastest time under an hour (1993).
    After many clashes with the Cycling Federation, he reluctantly complied to their rules after being told he couldn't use 'Old Faithful' in competitions.
    He was the subject of the 2006 movie 'The Flying Scotsman', which chronicled his life, leading up to the record breaking velodrome attempt.
    He publicly acknowledged his homosexuality (January, 2011).
