Created the strips ‘Dickie Dare' (1933), ‘Terry and the Pirates' (1934) and ‘Steve Canyon' (1947)
Received the Reuben Award for excellence in cartooning twice (1947, 71)

Why he might be annoying:

He chain smoked.
He always felt ‘a slight twinge of guilt' about being 4-F during World War II.
During World War II, he produced the ‘educational' comic ‘How to Spot a Jap.'
His unabashedly pro-military views caused ‘Steve Canyon' to drop in circulation during the Vietnam War era.

Why he might not be annoying:

During World War II he donated his time to produce a special strip, ‘Male Call,' just for military papers.
A speech by a character in ‘Terry and the Pirates' about the responsibilities of being a member of the Air Force was considered so inspirational that it was read into the Congressional Record (1943).
When R. Crumb ran into difficulties with the IRS, he helped Crumb out financially.
The last ‘Steve Canyon' strip was a memorial to Caniff signed by 78 fellow cartoonists.
The National Society of Cartoonists named its Lifetime Achievement Award after him.
