    Burned during a napalm attack on her village by South Vietnamese planes (June 8, 1972)
    A photograph of her running down a road after the attack won a Pulitzer Prize and became one of the most famous images from the war
    Founded the Kim Foundation to fund surgery for young war victims
    Became a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador (1997)
    Subject of the documentary film 'Kim's Story: The Road from Vietnam' (1994) and the biography 'The Girl in the Picture: The Story of Kim Phuc, the Photograph and the Vietnam War' (1999)
    The government of Vietnam forced her to drop out of medical school to make propaganda appearances (1982).
    She wrote, 'At 19, I no longer had any hope and wanted to die.'
    Many accounts of her life imply the planes in the napalm attack were American, which seems to really cheese off conservatives.
    She suffered third degree burns on 50% of her body, was hospitalized 14 months, and still bears scars from the attack.
    During a trip from Moscow to Cuba, she and her husband defected during a fueling stop in Newfoundland (1992).
    She passed the Canadian citizenship test with a perfect score (1997).
    In a speech at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (1996), she said that if she met the pilot who dropped the napalm on her, she would tell him, 'We cannot change history, but at least we can try and do our best to promote peace.'
