    Portrayed Dr. Watson to Basil Rathbone's Sherlock Holmes in 14 films (1939-46)
    Also appeared in 'The Scarlet Pimpernel' (1934), 'Treasure Island' (1934), 'Becky Sharp' (1935), 'She' (1935), 'The Charge of the Light Brigade' (1936), 'Rebecca' (1940), 'Suspicion' (1941), 'Lassie Come Home' (1943), 'Son of Lassie' (1945), 'The Corn Is Green' (1945), 'Limelight' (1952) and 'Bwana Devil' (1953)
    He was typecast as blustering, foolish upper-class Englishmen.
    Sherlock Holmes purists complained that he made Watson look like a buffoon.
    He wrote an autobiography, 'Games, Gossip and Greasepaint,' that was never published.
    He was seriously wounded in World War I, with eleven bullets in his left leg.
    He and Rathbone had good chemistry together and were great friends off-screen.
    He and Rathbone performed a series of Sherlock Holmes radio shows for war bond drives during WWII.
