    President of Tunisia (November 7, 1987-January 14, 2011); resigned after massive protests regarding issues such as freedom of speech, unemployment, corruption and poor living conditions

Why he might be annoying:

    He became president by calling his predecessor, Habib Bourguiba, unfit to rule due to medical reasons and senility.
    He suppressed free speech in Tunisia, including heavy surveillance on the Internet.
    His second wife, Leila Trabelsi, is a shopaholic.
    Lots of Tunisians thought that he never finished high school.
    He won several elections marked by government intimidation (1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2009).
    He outlawed the Al-Nahdah (Renaissance) party (1991).
    His suppression of Islamic militants sparked criticism abroad because it quickly degenerated into human rights abuses, including the persecution of moderate politicians demanding democracy.
    His political party dominates Tunisian politics.
    Under his rule, the Tunisian economy is moving like a roller coaster.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He reduced Tunisia’s slum population to about a half.
    He fought for Tunisia’s independence.
    He was kicked out from school because his affiliation with the Neo Destour party got exposed.
    He was subsequently denied admittance to any French-administered school.
    He is an avid supporter of the peace process with Israel.
    He quickly brought stability back to Tunisia once he took power.
    When a drought and locust invasion struck Tunisia, he handled the crisis without any political repression.
    He supports Olympic values, which earned him the Olympic Merit Award (1996).
