Scandal ridden Governor Rod Blagojevich asked him to be a special investigator to the Illinois gaming board (2004).
Many Republicans strongly disagreed with his position on closing the Guantanamo Bay prison.
The U.S. House of Representatives voted, mostly along party lines, to cite him for contempt for his role in the 'Fast and Furious' program (June 28, 2012).

He graduated Columbia Law School.
As an undergraduate, he played on Columbia University's basketball team.
He worked for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund.
The National Law Journal named him as one of the most influential minority lawyers in the US.
Republican President Ronald Reagan appointed him as a superior court judge in Washington, DC.
