Artist

The Resume

    Born in Kos, Greece
Lived in the 4th century BC
Court painter to Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great
Painted 'Alexander Wielding a Thunderbolt,' 'Aphrodite Anadyomene,' 'Sacrifice in Cos' and 'Calumny'
Called 'the greatest painter of Antiquity'

Why he might be annoying:

    None of his paintings survive.
He wrote a treatise on painting that has also been lost.
His reputation as one of the greats of art rests entirely on the say-so of ancient writers like Pliny the Elder.

Why he might not be annoying:

Pliny claimed, 'He singly contributed almost more to painting than all the other artists put together.'
At the time of his death, he was working on a painting of Aphrodite which was left unfinished because no one could be found with enough skill to complete it.
He inspired Sandro Botticelli to paint 'The Birth of Venus' and 'Calumny of Apelles.'
