Biblical Character

The Resume

    (circa 2000 BC-1700 BC)
    Son of Abraham and Sarah
Father of twin sons Esau and Jacob
Raised in Mesopotamia (present day Iraq)
Settled in Gerar (present day south-central Israel)
Before death foretold in his Testament of Isaac the birth of Jesus and the formation of the 12 Tribes of Israel
Reported to have died in Hebron, Israel, at age 180 and buried by his sons in the cave of Machpelah
Story of his life written in Holy Bible's Book of Genesis, Chapters 17-28
Known as Is'haq in the Koran

Why he might be annoying:

His father was 100 and his mother 90 years old when he was born.
His name translates to 'he laughs' because his folks thought God was joshing them when told they would have a son so late in reproductive life.
When he turned 40, rather than seek a bride, his dad had a steward go to town and bring him back one, so his marriage to Rebekah was an arranged one.
Feeling his Philistine neighbors would kill him for having such a hottie for a wife, he told them she was his sister.
He didn't sire his twin boys until he turned 60.
He favored his son Esau while his wife favored Jacob, making for one dysfunctional family.
He may or may not have existed.

Why he might not be annoying:

At just 8 days old and without consent, he was given a circumcision.
As a young lad his father Abraham took him to Mount Moria to be sacrificed, but it was just a test of faith by God and an angel stopped the event before he was stuck by his dad's blade.
His mom died when he was 36 and didn't get to see him marry.
As a successful farmer, his neighbors got jealous and plugged up his wells until Abimelech, king of the Philistines, interceded and stopped the nonsense.
Old and blind, he sent for Esau to give him his divine blessing, making him heir apparent, but Jacob, knowing dad couldn't see, pretended to be Esau and got the blessing, causing a serious rift between the two brothers (ah, kids in those days).
By all accounts he was gentle, good-natured and had a strong rapport with God.
In 1635 Rembrandt created a famed painting of him not getting killed. (see picture)
