The Resume

    (January 22, 1936-November 3, 2016)
Born in Cape Town, South Africa
Mayor of Bedfordview, South Africa (1974-75)
Founding member of the Conservative Party when it split from the Nationalist Party (1982)
Member of Parliament for Krugersdorp (1987-89)
Provided assassin Janusz Walus with the gun used to kill African National Congress leader Chris Hani (April 10, 1993)
Convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to death

Why he might be annoying:

He left the Catholic Church for the pro-apartheid Afrikaans Protestant Church.
Progressive Party MP Harry Schwarz called him ‘the biggest racist in Parliament.’
He said, ‘If AIDS stops black population growth, it will be like Father Christmas.’ (1989)
Conservative Party official Andries Beyers called him ‘an embarrassment to us.’
During trips to Europe, he befriended Holocaust denier David Irving and National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen.
He had hoped that the assassination of Hani would provoke riots that would disrupt the negotiations over ending apartheid.
At one of his unsuccessful applications for parole, the judge declared that he was unrepentant about his crime and that an apology he had offered through his lawyers to the Hani family was merely ‘lip service.’ (2013)

Why he might not be annoying:

He was the youngest commanding officer of the Witwatersrand Rifle Regiment.
He was staunchly opposed to Communism.
The assassination he orchestrated backfired, as the Hani killing prompted the African National Congress and the government of F.W. De Klerk to accelerate negotiations, leading to multiracial elections a year later.
