Why he might be annoying:

    He was a devout Christian, and even refused to run in all important track and field races.
    This led him to drop out of contention for the 100 meters race in the 1924 Paris Summer Olympics.
    His time of 47.6 seconds in the 400 meters race was controversial ratified as a world record despite it being 0.2 seconds slower than the record for the greater distance of 440 yards.
    Due to his birth and death in China, some of that country's Olympic literature lists Liddell as China's first Olympic champion.

Why he might not be annoying:

    During his time in boarding school, he was captain of the cricket and rugby union teams.
    He also earned the Blackheath Cup for his accomplishment as the school's best athlete.
    His performance in the 400 meters race was a European record until 1936.
    He helped build Minyuan Stadium in his birthplace of Tianjin.
    He remained in good spirits up until his death while in captivity.

    When British runner Allan Wells won the 100 meters race at the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics, he dedicated his gold medal to Liddell.
    In addition to Charleson, he was portrayed by Joseph Fiennes in the 2016 film 'On Wings of Eagles.'
