TV Series
    (September 10, 1986-May 25, 1990)
Aired on Showtime (1986-90) and Fox (1988-90)
Premise: Garry Shandling stars as a comedian who is aware that he is a TV sitcom character
It is often mistakenly referred to as 'The Garry Shandling Show.' (Including in Shandling's AIA profile.)
Its breaking of the fourth wall was hailed as wildly innovative, even though Burns and Allen had been doing similar things over three decades earlier.
During a live election night episode (1988), guest Don Cornelius incorrectly announced that Michael Dukakis had won.
Shandling passed on a chance to be permanent guest host of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson to make the series, thus making the show indirectly responsible for the whole Jay vs. CoCo fiasco.
It had a catchy theme song. ('This is the theme to Garry's show... Garry called me up and asked if I would write his theme song')
The layout and furnishings for the show's set were copied from Shandling's real-life condo in Sherman Oaks.
It was the first cable comedy show to receive multiple Emmy nominations in a year (Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series, 1988).
TV Guide described it as 'audacious, satirical, hip, sophisticated and wonderfully silly, and often miraculously all of the above at the same time.'
