    (April 4, 1920-January 11, 2010)
    Born in Tulle, France
Birth name was Maurice Henri Joseph Scherer (or possibly Jean-Marie Maurice Scherer)
Member of the French 'New Wave' in film
Editor of the film journal 'Cahiers du Cinema'
Directed 'My Night at Maud's' (1969), 'Claire's Knee' (1970), 'Love in the Afternoon' (1972), 'The Marquise of O' (1976), 'The Aviator's Wife' (1981), 'Pauline at the Beach' (1983), 'Full Moon in Paris' (1984), 'The Green Ray' (1986), 'Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle' (1987), 'Boyfriends and Girlfriends' (1987), 'A Tale of Springtime' (1990), 'A Tale of Winter' (1992), 'A Summer's Tale' (1996), 'Autumn Tale' (1998), The Lady and the Duke' (2001), 'Triple Agent' (2004) and 'Romance of Astree and Celadon' (2007)
He obscured his background, giving out different versions of his original name and his birth date.
He rarely had his picture taken and attended the New York premiere of one of his movie wearing a fake mustache.
He was so secretive that his mother allegedly died without knowing that her son and Eric Rohmer were the same person.
His films were talky and slow moving, with Gene Hackman's character in 'Night Moves' saying, 'I saw a Rohmer film once. It was kind of like watching paint dry.'
He was married to Therese Barbet for 52 years until his death.
His studies of Alfred Hitchcock and Howard Hawks led to a greater critical appreciation for the two directors.
A critic noted, 'For films that deal to a large extent with resisting temptation, they are tantalizingly erotic.'
