    As a teen, she had an affair with a wealthy Chinese businessman, possibly for money.
    When she turned leftwing, she downplayed her earlier support of French colonialism.
    She worked as a censor for the occupying Nazis in France (but later joined the French Resistance).
    She falsely claimed to have tortured a French collaborator.
    A lifelong alcoholic, she spent much of her final years plastered.
    In old age she fell in love with a gay man 38 years her junior.
    Her father died when she was four.
    Her mother’s attempts to run a rice plantation impoverished the family.
    Her mother and older brother physically abused her.
    She helped pioneer the nouveau roman, a genre that stressed details over plot.
    She claimed to have rescued fellow Resistance fighter (and future French president) Francois Mitterand.
    She suffered from hallucinations in her later years.
