Voting for King Ludwig I of Bavaria has been suspended for the week due to inclusion in Last Week's Top 25 Most or Least Annoying.
    (August 25, 1786-February 29, 1868)
    Born in Strasbourg, France
    King of Bavaria (1825-48)
Father of King Maximillian II of Bavaria and King Otto of Greece
He insisted on comemorating the events of his life, no matter how mundane, by writing really bad poems.
His rule became increasingly repressive over time.
He was a strong opponent of Protestantism despite having married a Protestant princess.
He triggered rioting by imposing a tax on beer (May, 1844).
He made one of his mistresses, dancer Lola Montez, a countess.
He eventually resigned rather than rule as a constitutional monarch.
His wedding to Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen was also the first Oktoberfest (1810).
He loaned 1.5 million florins from his personal funds to help the Greeks in their war of independence.
He encouraged industrialization, including the building of the first railroad in Germany.
His patronage of the arts, science and architecture transformed Munich from a provincial backwater into one of the cultural centers of Europe.
