The Resume

    (September 30, 1889-December 20, 1962)
    Born in Peshawar, Pakistan
    British military officer and financier
First husband of Agatha Christie (1914-28)

Why he might be annoying:

He was a pilot until he developed a sinus condition and had to quit flying.
He left Agatha alone on weekends as a ‘golf widow.’ (‘He was taking the game so seriously that it might have been a religion.’)
He hated dealing with ‘illness, death, and trouble’ and responded to the death of Agatha’s mother by going on vacation.
The combination of her mother’s death and his announcement that he wanted a divorce so he could marry his mistress triggered Agatha’s 11-day disappearance (1926).
The night of Agatha’s disappearance, he had gone to a party to meet his mistress, Nancy Neele, and announce their engagement.
The need to earn money after the divorce prompted Agatha to write what she considered her least-favorite novel, ‘The Mystery of the Blue Train.’
Agatha considered dropping his last name after the divorce, but her publisher convinced her to keep the name since readers had grown accustomed to it.

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned the Distinguished Service Order and St. George’s Cross during World War I.
During Agatha’s disappearance, the police staked out his house, monitored his phone calls, and trailed him to and from his office.
Rosalind Hicks, his daughter with Agatha, said about his life after he and Agatha divorced, ‘Eventually my father married Nancy Neele and they lived happily together until she died. I saw him quite often and we always liked and understood one another.’
