Commentator
    (January 1, 1946- )
    Born in Chicago, Illinois
    Black conservative
Research fellow for the Hoover Institute at Stanford University
Op-ed columnist for the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal and Harper's
Wrote 'The Content of Our Character: A New Vision of Race in America' (1991), 'A Dream Deferred: The Second Betrayal of Black Freedom in America' (1999) and 'White Guilt: How Blacks and White Together Destroyed the Promise of the Civil Rights Era' (2006)
He dislikes being described as a conservative, saying he prefers 'classical liberal.'
He titled a book, 'Bound Man: Why We Are Excited About Obama and Why He Can't Win' (2007).
After Obama proved he could win, he dismissed the title as a 'marketing device' that he put 'about 30 seconds' of thought into.
He called Obama voters 'obsessed with race' while writing a book about him that analyzes him almost entirely in terms of racial identity.
He suggested that he has a special insight into Obama's psychology because they're both biracial.
He said, 'In a sense, Hilary is blacker than Barack.'
He began buying his own clothes in 7th grade (using money from a paper route) and largely paid his own way through college.
When a landlord refused to rent an apartment to him and his wife because they're an interracial couple, he successfully sued, noting 'It was something I learned from my family. You never walk away. The laws are only good if you use them.'
Formerly a traditional liberal, he began rethinking his views on race when a colleague at San Jose State assumed that as a black man he would automatically support a course in ethnic literature.
He is opposed to affirmative action, arguing that it stigmatizes black achievements.
He won a National Book Award for 'The Content of Our Character.'
He won an Emmy and a Writers Guild Award for the PBS documentary 'Seven Days in Bensonhurst' (1991).
