The Resume

    (circa 1956-January 17, 2007)
    Born in Uganda
    Birth name was Alice Auma
Member of the Acholi ethnic group
    Self-proclaimed spirit medium
Claimed to be possessed by Lakwena, the spirit of an Italian army captain who had drowned in the Nile during World War I
Formed the Holy Spirit Movement (1986)
Combined elements of messianic Christianity and traditional Acholi beliefs
Had 10,000-15,000 followers at the movement’s peak
Fought against the government of Yoweri Museveni

Why she might be annoying:

Her Holy Spirit Movement was supposed to end the bloodshed in Uganda – by starting yet another rebellion against the government.
She told her followers that anointing themselves with her holy oil would protect them from bullets.
She armed her soldiers with sticks, which she said would turn bees into bullets, and stones, which she said would explode like grenades.
Surprisingly, things did not work out that way in actual battle.
After she fled to Kenya, she was jailed for three months for entering the country illegally (1987).
Many of her followers went on to join the even more fanatical Lord’s Resistance Army led by her cousin, Joseph Kony.

Why she might not be annoying:

She was abandoned by two husbands for not being able to have children.
Her followers actually won a couple of early battles, when the sight of thousands of bare-chested, stick-wielding, hymn-singing warriors unnerved the government’s soldiers enough that they fled rather than fight.
She pleaded for Kony to stop fighting so the Acholi could live in peace.
