Why he might be annoying:

    Many of his paintings depicting Weimar-era Germany are images of grotesque prostitutes.
    He enthusiastically joined the German Army in 1914 just so he could say that had tried military life.
    His painting titled 'The Trench' which featured a ghoulish WWI battlefield scene was so controversial that the director of the museum that showed the piece was asked to resign.

Why he might not be annoying:

    WWI made him into an ardent pacifist.
    He was labeled a 'degenerate artist' by the Nazis and was forced to paint only landscapes.
    The Nazis showcased many of his paintings in a 'degenerate art' show. They later burned and destroyed several of his works.
    His paintings on WWI depict a horrific realism that was not seen before in German art.
    He was a graduate of the Dresden Art Academy and later a teacher there until the Nazis forced him to quit.
    He was a decorated combat veteran, and was wounded multiple times at the battle of the Somme.
