Irene (April 17, 1893-January 25, 1969) was born in New Rochelle, New York
Popularized modern ballroom dancing in the 1910's
Starred in the Irving Berlin musical 'Watch Your Step' (1914) and the film 'The Whirl of Life' (1915)

Why they might be annoying:

Many of their dances had silly names such as the Turkey Trot and the Bunny Hug.
Vernon, who was very skinny, was described by a critic as 'a soda straw with legs.'
They were once so poor they had to depend on their servant's gambling skills to survive.
They endorsed products such as phonographs and cosmetics.
Irene married three times after Vernon's death.

Why they might not be annoying:

They made 'wild' ragtime music and dancing respectable.
Irene was one of the first female celebrities to abandon the corset.
They gave lessons at the height of their fame.
Vernon fought on the Western front and died during a flight training exercise.
Their life story was made into the film 'The Story of Irene and Vernon Castle,' starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
