Why he might be annoying:

He never graduated high school, having flunked English three times.
Not surprisingly, he later claimed, 'English and writing have little to do with each other.'
He accused Otto Preminger of ruining 'Exodus' in bringing it to the screen.
His 'Mila 18' forced Joseph Heller to change the title of 'Catch-18' to 'Catch-22.'
He admitted, 'I could be ruthless. I hurt a lot of people on the way up.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He was a radio operator with the Marines during the battles of Guadalcanal and Tarawa.
He hung his high school report cards with their 'F's over his desk while writing to motivate him.
He was known for his meticulous research, interviewing, for example, over 1200 people for 'Exodus.'
After the publication of 'The Haj,' he received death threats from Arab extremists.
He requested that his tombstone bear the epitaph 'American Marine. Jewish Writer.'
