    (September 20, 1941- )
    Born in Tacoma, Washington
    Glass sculptor
Works include 1975 Navajo blanket series, ‘Cylinders,’ ‘Baskets,’ ‘Seaforms,’ ‘Macchia (spot),’ and ‘Chandeliers’
Co-founder of Pilchuck Glass School (1971)
Permanent displays in some 30 states (the largest being in Oklahoma City) and multiple Canadian provinces
    He is bipolar.
His older brother died in a Navy flight-training mishap (1957).
When his father died of a heart attack in 1958, it was only him and his mother (who died in 2006).
While in England, he was cast through the windshield in a head-on car crash and lost his left eye (1976). His right foot was also heavily damaged.
His right arm was dislocated in a bodysurfing incident (1979). He would all but be able to hold a glassblowing pipe again.
He did not marry until his 60s, several years after his future wife gave birth to his son.
His marketing approach drew comparisons to, of all people, Napoleon Bonaparte.
He accused a former employee and businessman of copyright and trademark infringement (2006, later settled on the basis of inspiration and influence).
He worked as a commercial fisherman as a means of paying for graduate school.
Among his large architectural installations are Chihuly Over Venice and Chihuly in the Light of Jerusalem.
He credits his disinclination to hold the pipe and being required to hire additional people for his changing perspective – including faster response time – on the art of glass design.
Almost all of his exhibitions are organized and distributed by his own empire.
Likewise, his publishing company produces almost all of his literary and television exposure.
When one of his works travels and breaks, his studio simply churns out a duplicate.
He has two retail outlets in association with MGM Resorts International — one in Macau.
