World Leader
    (March 28, 1862-March 7, 1932)
    Born in Nantes, France
    Prime Minister of France (1909-11,1913,1915-16,1916-17,1921-22,1925-26,1929)
Co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for the Locarno Pact guaranteeing Germany's Western borders (1926)
With US Secretary of State Frank B. Kellogg, negotiated the Kellogg-Briand Pact renouncing war as an 'instrument of national policy' (1928)
As a student, he was described as 'intelligent, but so unwilling to waste good time studying' that he was usually in the bottom quarter of his classes.
His shifting political views prompted one critic to note, 'Briand can belong to anything at all if he believes that France and himself stand to win by it.'
Judging from the events of 1939-45, neither the Locarno Pact or the Kellogg-Briand Pact was a terribly effective means of securing peace.
While a student, he became good friends with Jules Verne.
He was one of the first politicians to propose creating a European Union.
He said, 'Just one step toward peace means a great success if one is determined to take another step the next day.'
