Why he might be annoying:

    He distanced himself from the family that adopted him.
    He was a demanding perfectionist.
    His dictatorial methods on the set of ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ allegedly caused Maria Falconetti to have a nervous breakdown.
    Most of his films were box office flops.
    He had trouble getting funding and as a result made few films.

    His adoptive parents were cold, rigid Lutherans.
    He was an excellent student.
    His script for ‘The Passion of Joan of Arc’ was based on the actual court transcripts of Joan's trial.
    He preferred to use unknown actors.
    He eschewed using heavily made up actors and elaborate sets.
    His films are sympathetic towards women trapped in oppressive societies.
