The Resume

    (November 18, 1998-March 25, 2005)
    79 episodes
Created by Craig McCracken for the Cartoon Network
Produced by Hanna-Barbera (1998-2001) and Cartoon Network Studios (2001-05)
Main characters: Blossom (voiced by Cathy Cavadini), Bubbles (voiced by Tara Strong), Buttercup (voiced by E.G. Daily) and Professor Utonium (voiced by Tom Kane)
Premise: Professor Utonium, longing for a family, creates three girls in his lab (using sugar, spice, and everything nice), but accidentally spills Chemical X into the mix, creating super-powered five-year-olds Blossom (the 'smart' red headed one - signature color pink), Bubbles (the 'cute' blond one - signature color baby blue) and Buttercup (the 'tough' brunette one - signature color light green)
The trio proceed to use their powers (flying, super-human strength, etc.) to protect the city of Townsville from the forces of evil
Spawned the 2002 movie 'The Powerpuff Girls Movie'

Why The Powerpuff Girls might be annoying:

Several folks incorrectly referred to them as the Powderpuff Girls (adding a 'd').
They have no ears, noses, hands or feet (though they wear white socks and Mary Janes on their legs).
Test tube babies are one thing, but five-year-olds created in a laboratory by a scientist is a tad creepy.
The mayor of Townsville was a blithering idiot, and his sultry, smoky-voiced, brainy secretary (Ms. Sara Bellum - pun intended) was a 'hidden-face character.'
Some parents groups denounced the show for its excessive use of violence.
The show's animation director was 'Dexter's Lab' creator Genndy Tartakovsky, who occasionally slipped Dexter into an episode (as a doll or in a background crowd scene).

Why The Powerpuff Girls might not be annoying:

As a student of California Institute of the Arts, McCracken introduced them in 1992 as 'The Whoopass Girls,' submitted it to Hanna-Barbera in 1994 as part of their 'What A Cartoon! Show' shorts program, and eventually it was morphed into 'The Powerpuff Girls.'
Their official 1998 debut was the highest rated premiere in Cartoon Network's history.
Their tagline is 'saving the world before bedtime.'
The villains they fought on a regular basis were cool, including Mojo Jojo (an evil scientist chimp that likes to say his own name), Fuzzy Lumpkins (a pink-furred hillbilly creature), the Gangreen Gang (green-skinned, dim-witted hoods) and Sedusa (a seductress with evil hair she can control).
When not saving Townsville, the girls were shown as typical five-year-old sisters, sometimes arguing with one another and asking their dad for more toys.
What those nosy parents groups failed to understand was as superheroes, the girls needed to fight to save the day, thus violence was inevitable.
Composer James L. Venable (of 'Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back' movie fame) created the opening theme for the show, while Scottish band Bis performed the closing theme.
The show was nominated for nine Annie Awards, winning twice (both in 2001), and five Emmy Awards, winning twice (in 2000 and 2005).
