    Fought in the Civil War
    Fought at the battles of First Bull Run, Seven Days, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Selma and in the Seige of Petersburg
    Commandant of cadets at West Point (1870-1875)
    Author of 'A New System of Infantry Tactics,' 'Tactics for Non-Military Bodies' and 'The Armies of Asia and Europe'
    Subject of 'Upton and the Army' by Stephen E. Ambrose

Why he might be annoying:

    He entered the Civil War fresh from West Point and took command of troops both older and more experienced in battle than himself.
    He was asocial and uncomfortable among civilians.
    He rarely laughed.

Why he might not be annoying:

    He developed tactics which helped to defeat the Confederacy and which are still in use by armies today.
    He was wounded fighting for the Union.
    He lost his wife to tuberculosis.
    In late life he suffered severe headaches and mental illness which resulted in his suicide.
    He hated slavery.
