Figure Skater

The Resume

    (January 22, 1951-February 2, 1989)
    Born in Bratislava, Slovak Republic
Won an Olympic gold medal in men's singles figure skating (1972)
Won three world championships (1971-73) and five European championships (1969-73)
Died of AIDS-related complications at age 38

Why he might be annoying:

He sported shaggy sideburns during his 70s heyday.
After going professional, he became a soloist with Holiday on Ice.
Fellow skater Toller Cranston described him as 'completely lacking in personality and finesse: a generic Soviet-style skater who had been browbeaten into becoming a fine technician.'

Why he might not be annoying:

He put off going pro by a year because the 1973 World Championships were being held in his hometown of Bratislava.
He turned in his best performance at that farewell, earning a perfect 6.0 for artistic impression in his free skate.
Bratislava named its Winter Stadium after him and holds an annual Ondrej Nepela Memorial competition.
The Slovak Republic named him Slovakian athlete of the century.
