The Resume

    (January 21, 1985- )
    Born in Clinton, Iowa
Former Staff Sergeant in the US Army
Member of the 2nd Battalion 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade
    Served from 2003 to 2011
First living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War
Cited for saving the lives of his squad during the War in Afghanistan
Wrote an autobiography, 'Living with Honor' (2012)
Student at Colorado State University (as of 2014)

Why he might be annoying:

He wrote his autobiography with a collaborator.
He decided to enlist in the Army while working as a self described 'sandwich artist' at Subway.
Before his job at Subway, he worked at Krispy Kreme and admits to having put on weight by eating as many as six donuts at a time off the assembly line.
In his autobiography, he claims that part of his reasoning for enlisting was because 'I wanted one of those free T-shirts they were handing out at the recruiting center.'
As a Sophomore in High School, he dated a Senior.
President Obama compared him to 8228>Audie Murphy during his Medal of Honor speech; while both soldiers were heroic, Murphy did considerably more during WWII.

Why he might not be annoying:

His unit was ambushed by the Taliban, instantly wounding the two Unit leaders in a hail of bullets (October 2007).
He charged headfirst into enemy gunfire to pull wounded soldiers to safety during the attack.
He continued to face off enemy gunfire to pull his best friend, Sergeant Joshua Brennan, to safety, and then tended his bleeding until the MEDEVAC arrived. (Brennan would die the next day during surgery.)
A member of his Battalion said ‘for all intents and purposes, with the amount of fire that was going on in the conflict at the time, he shouldn't be alive.’
He is the first living recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War.
Like Audie Murphy, he was uncomfortable being singled out by people in public for his heroism.
He has kept a low profile since retiring from the US Army.
He wrote, 'being a good person in one setting does not give you a pass to act like an asshole in another setting.'
When he learned of his nomination for a Medal of Honor, he said 'If I’m a hero, every man that stands around me, every woman in the military, everyone who goes into the unknown is a hero. So if you think that’s a hero—as long as you include everyone with me.'
He told David Letterman he was uncomfortable recounting the ambush on the Late Show, but Letterman proceeded to make him talk about it anyway.
When he was finally awarded the Medal of Honor, he said 'I can't wear this for myself. I will wear it for every single one of the service members that I have ever served with.'
    He is a hero.
