    (October 10, 1837-July 18, 1863)
    Union officer during the Civil War
    Formed the first volunteer colored regiment and took command (May 13, 1863)
    Led the newly formed 54th Massachusetts to battle at Legaresville (July 13, 1863) and Secessionville on (July 16, 1863)
    Led the 54th Massachusetts on an assault on Confederate Battery Wagner (July 18, 1863)
    Killed during the assault and buried side by side with his men
    Portrayed in the film 'Glory'
    He commanded a colored regiment, despite being white.
    He dropped out of Harvard after three years to work with his uncle in New York.
    He was only an officer due to his social status.
    Of the 600 men who were with Shaw, 281 were killed, wounded, missing or taken prisoner.
    Fort Wagner never surrendered.
    He allowed freed Black men to strike a blow at their former oppressors.
    After his death he recieved no officers burial honors from the Confederacy due to the fact that his regiment was colored.
    When he found out his men would not be paid to fight, he refused his pay.
    He fought the (still racist) system to get his men supplies.
    He was raised an abolitionist.
    He grew up around famous Americans like Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, William Lloyd Garrison and Harriet Beecher Stowe.
    The Confederacy released an order that CO's of colored regiments were to be killed, he still accepted the commission.
