Biblical Character
Appears in the Book of Genesis
    Grandson of Abraham
    Son of Isaac and Rebekah
    Twin brother of Jacob
Born minutes before Jacob and thus entitled to lead the family after Isaac’s death
He was not much of a negotiator, selling his birthright to Jacob for ‘a mess of pottage.’
He had a body hair problem.
He plotted to kill Jacob, who fled after being warned by Rebekah.
After his parents disapproved of his first wife, he bigamously married his cousin.
Their sibling rivalry spilled over into a national rivalry, as Esau’s descendants, the Edomites, clashed repeatedly with Jacobs’ descendants, the Israelites.
His brother went through an elaborate deception to receive Isaac’s blessing.
After discovering that he had been duped, Isaac not only did not take back his blessing of Jacob, he refused to give a second blessing to Esau.
Despite Jacob’s attempts to steal Isaac’s inheritance from Esau, Esau wound up with all his material wealth when Jacob had to flee.
    He eventually reconciled with Jacob.
