    With Anne McCaffrey wrote two books in the 'Planet Pirates' series
    Also wrote 'Remnant Population' (1996) and 'The Speed of Dark' (2002)

Why she might be annoying:

    She wanted to be a physicist 'but I flunked calculus.'
    She plays the accordion.
    She claimed one of the reasons she never did drugs was 'If you have glasses as thick as mine, you can get an alternative reality just by getting mist on your lenses.'
    She wrote an essay complaining about the 'Ground Zero Mosque' in which she said, 'Many Muslims have all the virtues of civilized persons.'
    She told the BBC that everyone should be given a barcode at birth.

    She served in the US Marine Corps as a computer specialist.
    She spent six years as an ambulance driver and paramedic at the rural clinic where her husband was a doctor.
    Her novels are known for having strong, unconventional female characters.
    She adopted a son with autism, which influenced her Nebula Award winning novel 'Speed of Dark,' which features an autistic narrator.
    She said her proposal about the barcodes was not meant seriously: 'I'm a science-fiction/fantasy writer. Impractical, impossible, unpalatable, downright weird and peculiar ideas are what we play with all the time.'
