Military Personnel

The Resume

    (January 2, 1945-November 29, 2017)
Born in Caplijna, Bosnia and Herzegovina
    General in the Croatian Army
Main liaison between the Croatian government and military and the Croat Defense Council (an army formed by Croats living in Bosnia and Herzegovina)
Indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
Found guilty of crimes against humanity and violating the Geneva Convention and sentenced to 20 years in prison (May 29, 2013)
Filed an appeal (June 23, 2013)
Some charges were overturned, but his twenty year sentence was upheld
Upon hearing the decision, he declared ‘With disdain I reject your verdict’ and committed suicide by swallowing poison

Why he might be annoying:

He ordered ethnic cleansing of ‘historically Croatian’ parts of Bosnia.
Bosnian Muslims who had previously fought alongside Bosnian Croats against Serbian forces were among the people swept up in mass detentions.
He was in charge of the Dretelj detention camp, where prisoners were starved, beaten and raped.
If he had not committed suicide, he probably would have been released soon, since he had spent 13 years in prison during his trials, and ICTY defendants have usually been released after serving two-thirds of their sentence.
Many Croatians, including government officials, hailed him as a martyr.
The Telegraph wrote that his suicide and his veneration by much of the Croatian public proved ‘a very uncomfortable reality: many in the Balkans refuse to accept that the horrific ethnic cleansing of the 1990s was wrong.’

Why he might not be annoying:

He earned three college degrees: in electrical engineering, philosophy, and drama.
He directed stage shows, TV movies, documentaries, and a film.
He allowed the UN to send a humanitarian convoy to the city of Mostar while he was besieging it.
He voluntarily turned himself in to the ICTY.
He knew how to make a dramatic exit.
